SHUMAYA singer Kabelo "Kaybee" Pekile of kwaito outfit Dbn Nyts survived a horrific car crash, dusted himself off and is now back at work.
The muso's white Volkswagen GTI fell off the precipice of the traffic circle near Orlando Stadium in Soweto and plunged into the valley in the early hours of last Monday morning.
Until now, the accident had been kept hush-hush. The hit-maker was on his way home after a performance at DJ Ganyani's birthday celebration at the popular Sedibeng Pub in Meadowlands, Soweto, when his life flashed before his eyes.
The car was written off but the young man and his passenger made off with their lives and health intact, he confirmed on the way from a performance in Polokwane yesterday. He said the accident was due to driving in an unfamiliar area which was also dark.
"I was coming from work. It was just me and DJ Yzee in my car. That circle is dark. We were following the other guys I work with. As I was driving, I didn't [immediately] see the circle. I then tried to avoid it and I drove over the fence (guard rail)," said Pekile.
"We are both fine. Luckily, there was no alcohol involved. No one was intoxicated. The police came and tested us and no one was arrested. The car war written off but I'm just happy that we survived," he said.
Pekile is the fifth member of Dbn Nyts. The group was spotted by Kalawa Jazmee boss Oscar "Oskido" Mdlongwa in Yeoville, Johannesburg, performing their now nationwide smash Shumaya and then roped them into his stable.
The group is made up of members between 22 and 23 years of age and has earned three Metro FM Music Awards nominations in the Song of the Year, Best Duo/Group and Best Kwaito album categories.
Yesterday, Johannesburg Metro Police spokeswoman Edna Mamonyane said the accident office was closed on Sundays and she could only confirm the accident today
