University gives students 4 Hours to leave campus

THE Cape Peninsula University of Technology has been completely shut down until 2016. This comes after weeks of student protests which saw the university’s property being vandalised and damaged.
But while the protesters seemingly achieved their aim, many students staying in the university’s residences slammed the early closure. Residence students said they had been told to evacuate their rooms immediately or no later than 4pm today.
Some said they didn’t know where they would go as they had come all the way from the Eastern Cape and didn’t have families in Cape Town.
Student Lona Nkwali (24) said: “This is madness. Where are we supposed to go in 48 hours? My parents don’t have that money for me to go back home now.”
Vice-chancellor Dr Prins Nevhutalu said the university had been held hostage for the past few weeks by a group of students who were determined to make the university ungovernable.
“All students are required to vacate the university residences immediately or no later than 4pm on Wednesday if immediate plans cannot be arranged. The assessments for non-exit level courses will remain suspended until 11 January 2016,” he said.
The Department of Home Affairs’ green light for international students with study permits to remain in SA until 31 December is of little comfort to students who have to leave their residences
