Husband and wife die together but have separate funerals

A MURDERED woman’s family doesn’t want her to share a funeral with her pastor husband, who allegedly shot and killed her and then himself. Angela Gumede (49) from KwaMakhutha, south of Durban, left home after a row with a stepson three months ago. Her husband, pastor Mbuyiselwa Gumede (71), begged her to come back home, but she refused. So he allegedly ambushed and shot her on Monday as she was walking to work with a friend on Old Main Road, Amanzimtoti. Her family said he came out of the bush just as Angela was reaching Zulwini Gardens Estate, where she worked as a domestic worker. The couple used to live at Ilovu A section with their nine children. They had four children from their marriage and the pastor had five from a previous relationship. Angela’s daughter, Silungelo Masondo (31), said her mother left her husband to live with her at her gogo’s house. “She called her husband a few weeks ago as she wanted to fetch her belongings, but he refused. “He told her not to set her foot there again. Last week he came to beg my mum to go back home but she refused. He called her non-stop, threatening her,” said Silungelo. She said she never thought he would kill her mum. “They loved each other a lot. I don’t know what changed him. “He was a man of God who forgave easily, a pastor of Buhle be Star in Zion in Adams Mission,” said Silungelo. Angela’s mother, Gertrude Masondo (67), said: “I don’t want my daughter’s in-laws near her coffin or at her funeral. We will have a separate funeral.” Major Thulani Zwane said Amanzimtoti cops are investigating.
