Former Bafana Bafana captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa's multi-million insurance payout has been finalised, Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Irvin Khoza announced on Tuesday.
Ivan Khoza, chairman of the PSL tweeted on Tuesday that the payout had been received and would be processed.
"The Senzo Meyiwa insurance payout has been received by the league. We will notify the family, the club and beneficiaries in a proper manner. PSL has 1 policy with all the clubs. Injury and untimely death. Officials also qualify. All the players are covered" - Dr Irvin Khoza said.
The former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper and fan favourite Meyiwa was shot and killed in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, while visiting his singer and actress girlfriend Kelly Khumalo last October in what the police have labelled a botched robbery.
Meyiwa's killers have yet to be brought to book despite Sam Meyiwa, Senzo's father stating he is aware of who the killers are. The insurance payout is said to be R5 million and will be distributed among Meyiwa's children and close relatives
Senzo was murdered on October 26 2014. There has been no breakthrough in the murder investigation, which has frustrated the Meyiwa family and Senzo’s fans.
A man named Zamokuhle Mbatha was arrested three days after Senzo was shot but later released. Mbatha is now suing the police for R7.5-million for unlawful and wrongful arrest as well defamation.
He is claiming another R2.5-million from the National Prosecuting Authority for malicious prosecution. The matter is expected to be heard next year.
Meanwhile, in June this year, Afro-pop queen Kelly Khumalo pulled a shocker when she rolled up her sleeved to fight for Senzo Meyiwa's insurance millions.
Kelly Khumalo begged her producer Sello 'Chicco' Twala to help her get a lawyer to claim her share of Meyiwa's life cover insurance millions.
Khumalo learnt through the media that there was about R5 million the Meyiwas were set to receive from a life insurance policy taken out by his club Orlando Pirates through the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and administered by Delphisure Group Insurance.
Khumalo has a 1-year-old daughter with the late Pirates and Bafana Bafana captian who was gunned down at the songbird's family home in Vosloorus, on the East Rand, last year.
A source close to Khumalo said the Qinisela hitmaker initially decided not to claim a cent from Meyiwa's estate. This was after a protracted public spat with the footballer's father Sam Meyiwa that resulted in him banning her from the late footballer's funeral.
"She took a decision of not claiming a cent for her child after how she was treated by this old man because he created an impression that she did not Love Senzo but was only interested in his money," said the source.
There is likely going to be another drama considering the fact that there is bad blood between Senzo Meyiwa's father and Kelly Khumalo. Sam Meyiwa would want Kelly Khumalo to receive absolutely nothing, not even a cent from the R5 million, while Kelly Khumalo wants probably a third of even half of the millions for 'her child' whom she had with Senzo
