Nelson Mandela's grandson Mbuso Mandela's legal woes are piling up after he was arrested last week for failing to attend a maintenance case.
Mbuso (24) was nabbed last week Monday by Norwood police as he emerged out of the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court where he was appearing on a rape trial.
The young Mandela was scheduled to appear at the Johannesburg Family Court on August 6 after the mother of one of his two children filed a papgeld suit against him.
A warrant for his arrest was issued by the family court on August 6 but police could not effect it as he was arrested for rape that month. He was also sent to 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria for psychological observation following his successful bail bid in the rape case.
After apprehending him on Monday, the officers marched him across town to face his maintenance woes in a different court.
Gauteng police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini confirmed Mbuso's arrest.
"He was arrested after his criminal case was remanded on Monday [November 9]. He was then taken to the family court where a warrant of arrest was cancelled. He is reporting at Norwood twice a week as part of his bail conditions."
Mbuso's lawyer Marinda Veldman refused to comment.
Mandela's baby mama, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, confirmed to Sunday World that she had taken him to the family court for not supporting his child.
But she said she was not aware that Mandela was arrested for the case. "I'm not aware that he went to court because when I was there in August he did not come. The case no longer stands because his family is now supporting me and my child. We are fine now."
The woman said she never asked the court to arrest Mandela and all she wanted was for him to contribute to the upbringing of his child.
"I did not ask the magistrate to arrest him. They said because he knew he was supposed to come, therefore he had to be arrested," she said.
Mbuso told the court during his bail application in August that he had two children with different mothers and that a third "was on the way".
In addition to his latest legal troubles, Sunday World reported in September about two other criminals charges that he faced. A 41-year-old woman opened a case of assault against him on August 11, claiming that he assaulted her at the family home in Houghton after they had sex.
Mbuso's brother, Ndaba, also opened a case of theft against him at Norwood police station the same month, claiming that he stole $6000 (about R86000) from his room
