SHE was sitting with friends planning a party when she saw a passing vision of fire.
“I ignored it,” said Kelebogile Ruele from extension 12, Kagiso, west of Joburg.
A week later, on 7 December, Kelebogile was preparing instant porridge for two boys – her son and his cousin – both aged three, in her RDP. The kids were playing inside the bedroom as Kelebogile softly sang the hymn Ha Modimo a le teng ga a yo mathata (When God is there, there are no problems).
Minutes later her seven-year-old girl went into the RDP – and was greeted by a small fireball. The little boys screamed for help.
Kelebogile said: “I prayed three times – in the name of Jesus please help me to go inside and save the kids.”
As neighbours tried to put out the fire, Kelebogile rescued the boys but suffered bad burns on her hands.
She said she was grateful that the fire only destroyed the bedroom and not the kitchen, where plugs and appliances could have caused more damage.
Gogo Ouma Ruele (58) kept crying when asked about the fire. “I am a Christian, and we are told to forgive those who have trespassed against us, but this is tough for me,” she said.
One of the little boys is recovering at home, while the other is still in Leratong Hospital near Krugersdorp.
Krugersdorp police spokesman Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said no case had been opened and urged the family to report the fire
