IMPRISONED KING Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo is settling well behind bars, according to his family.
A member of his family, who asked not to be named, who was part of the entourage on nearly 10 who visited him on New Year's Day said the 50 year-old monarch was in good spirits. On New Year's Eve the SunTeam was the first to reveal that the King had been transferred to a correctional facility in East London from Mthatha.
After the Mthatha High Court dismissed his bail extension application on Wednesday, the King had to hand himself over immediately to Wellington Prison in Mthatha. Media reports and the Justice Ministry confirmed that he arrived at Wellington just before midnight. But his family informed the SunTeam that the king was then driven to East London the same night, which the Correctional Services department confirmed.
"He is doing well we are happy with how we saw him. We were met by the prison head who took great care of us during the visit."
"Zwelibanzi also said he is being treated well."
The king is said to have his own cell. The family member said when they were in the visiting area, other visitors and inmates started greeting and reciting the king's praises and clan names as a sign of respect. This is known as "ukukhahlela".
"We visited the tuckshop and bought some of his favourite things like cereal", said the family member.
Mthatha High Court Judge Nozuko Mjali dashed the Abathembu nation's last hope of saving their kimg from serving his 12 year sentence.
The same court had convicted him in October 2009 of about 10 charges including arson, kidnapping and culpable homicide sentencing him to 15 years.
He was granted bail and leave to appeal. Last year the Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed his leave to appeal and set aside the culpable homicide conviction. It also reduced the sentence to 12 years.
Attempts to appeal to the Constitutional Court and to petition to the Minister of Justice also failed last month. The day before the bail application extension was heard in court, the King exclusively told Daily Sun that 'only God could send him to jail'. Correctional Services spokesman Manelisi Wolela said of the king's transfer, "This is a normal operational matter that is based on the assessment of individual offender's profile to ensure appropriate accommodation in line with their security classification."
