Uzalo star Bonga Dlamini, whose contract has not been renewed, did not see it coming.
Dlamini, who is President Jacob Zuma's nephew, and also a cousin of Gugu Zuma, the producer of the show, portrays the character of Mkhonto Xulu, Muzi Xulu's younger brother.
While he was busy preparing to take the character to another level to maintain the momentum, he was FIRED!
Dlamini leaves at the time when viewers have established a love-hate relationship with him.
Born in Bulwer in KwaZulu-Natal, Dlamini said the decision has disappointed him because he was getting ready for the new season of Uzalo, which they began shooting on 30 November.
"I am disappointed but I am also looking forward to the new years and new challenges. I enjoyed playing Mkhonto and I had plans to make it more interesting," he said.
Though he has been fired from the show, Dlamini is proud that he was part of the telenovela's biggest achievement when it overtook Generations: The Legacy with viewership.
Marang Setshwaelo of Dream-catcher, a company that does publicity for Uzalo, said his departure had something to do with a change in the storyline.
"Yes, the storyline around his character evolved until that point," she claimed.
Dlamini admitted that in his acting career, it was his first time to play a thug and ex-convict. He went all out doing research and watching many television shows to make sure he portrayed the character differently.
In the story, Mkhonto spent 1 years in jail for something he did not do.
"What happened to him in jail really messed up with his mind. He came out of jail full of anger," Dlamini said.
