A South African is among three people killed in Jordan when a security officer opened fire on his colleagues an American-funded police training base.
South Africa's department of international affairs is trying to ascertain the circumstances of the shooting. In a preliminary statement‚ department spokesman Nelson Kgwete said via twitter that the SA embassy in Amman‚ Jordan‚ "is investigating reports that a SA national was killed by trainee Jordanian policemen in that country".
Foreign news reports said the shooter was a Jordanian security officer with the rank of captain‚ but were unclear as to whether he was from the army or police. Initial reports said he was a co-trainer.
He shot dead two US instructors and a South African before Jordanian security forces returned fire‚ killing him.
He had also wounded two other American instructors and four Jordanians
