MONDE Xabendwini says he’ll go to jail for abaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo!
The 45-year-old mechanic from Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni told Daily Sun he’s willing to leave his three kids and his job behind.
King Dalindyebo was sentenced to 12 years behind bars on 1 October on charges of assault, arson, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice.
Monde said it’s wrong for a king to be sent to prison. “According to Xhosa culture when a king is convicted of a crime, one of his people must serve the sentence on his behalf. I’m willing to spend the rest of my life behind bars for the king.”
Monde said when he read about the king’s conviction he was deeply moved.
“I made a decision to sacrifice my freedom for the sake of the king. This is an age-old practice in our culture, but changes have even affected our cultural laws,” he said.
“I don’t deny the fact that he committed these crimes but in Xhosa history a king has never been sent to prison. I love my family but I also love the king. My family will visit me in jail as I’d be doing the right thing.
“I will miss poking, but I’m prepared to be locked up for the king and nothing will change my mind. I would even die for him.”
One of Monde’s Xhosa neighbours said she didn’t encourage him, but he was right.
“In our history a king being arrested and sent to jail has never happened before. The royal family is also aware of this but haven’t said anything about it,” she said.
King Dalindyebo’s spokesman, Chief Mfundo Mtirara acknowledged Monde’s offer to go to jail as legitimate.
“Right now the issue here is about cultural law versus Western law. If the king falls off his horse, it is the duty of our people culturally to help him get back on it,” he said
