A CHURCH leader who made his congregation eat grass and drink petrol maintains he was instructed by God and likened his antics to communion.
A defiant Pastor Lesego Daniel of Rabboni Centre Ministries, told the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Rights Communities
(CRL commission) that he would not stop his actions.
Daniel said the grass, leaves and petrol were like “holy communion” and claimed petrol, through the Holy Spirit, was turned to pineapple.
“When I do things, it is no longer me but me and my master. I was led by the holy spirit,” Daniel told the commission investigation the commercialization of religion and abuse of people’s belief systems.
The investigative study was launched in August, which in the end seeks to have the religious sector regulated.
Daniel had a case to answer after the South African Council of Churches lodged a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission which referred the matter to the CRL.
“Jesus turned water to wine. Many people were healed from eating flowers, grass and petrol. If I declare, they begin to eat,” Daniel said.
He denied that the people were hypnotized before they ate grass. “I do not control people’s minds. I am under His authority….Find Him – my master – let him come and account.. If the Holy Spirit says stop, I will stop.”
The hearing proceeds but not without drama from members of the church and Daniel’s legal team.
CRL chairwoman Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva on several occasions warned them that they would be arrested for disrupting the proceedings.
About 200 people were bussed to Johannesburg to march to the commission’s offices in Braamfontein. Daniel’s followers attempted to forcefully enter the offices but wer stopped by security and other CRL staff members
