FIRED for having a UNION t-shirt

A PRISON warder from Baviaanspoort Correctional Facility in Tshwane claims he was fired for having union T-shirts in his office!
Percy Matlala told Daily Sun he’s a member of the South African Correctional Services Workers Union and had the T-shirts in his office to hand them over to colleagues during his lunch break.
He believes he was victimised because his union is new. It is seen as a rival by members of older unions.
Percy said he was surprised when his supervisor stormed into his office demanding to search his locker last Sunday.
“He found five union T-shirts that were there to be handed over to new members,” said Percy.
He claimed he was officially fired on Monday following a disciplinary hearing. He said another official who belonged to the same union was also fired. This was after a report was leaked to newspapers that two Boeremag inmates were planning to escape from the prison. He was blamed for the leak.
Percy claimed there were double standards as an official belonging to Popcru damaged a state vehicle and had it repaired at a township panel beater without permission, but nothing happened to him.
Percy said he appealed against his dismissal to Gauteng regional deputy commissioner Themba Magagula but had no success.
His union presiden, Tony Plaatjies said older unions felt threatened by them. “Percy was fired without the proper disciplinary procedures being followed,” he said.
Gauteng Correctional Services spokesman Ofentse Morwane said he couldn’t comment on the matter as it was with the arbitration appeal board
