The motorcade outside the home of the popular television actresss in Bramley, north of Johannesburg, is a decidedly expensive one.
Top politicians, business people and celebrities dressed in black outfits emerge from a predominance of German sedans - accompanied by the inevitable blue-light brigade - and comfort each other.
Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi, ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa, TV personalities Katlego Danke, Meshack Madima, Liopelo Maphathe and Lebo 'Elle' Tisane among others then join the sombre gathering at Bramley Primary School and sing hymns. They have come to pay their last respects to 18-month-old Prince Masakona Matsila, affectionately known as Masa, the son of TV star Florence Masebe, who drowned in the family's swimming pool on Saturday 14 November.
A MIRACLE THEN HEARTBREAK
Judging by the large crowd, one could be forgiven for mistaking this funeral for that of an elderly, high profile person. But speaker after speaker agrees that despite little Masa's young age, he touched so many lives and hearts.
And indeed Saturday 14 November is a day that Florence would rather forget. It's the day that she was born and the day that she lost her beloved 'miracle' baby. It's the day the former Muvhango actress' world came crumbling down because little Masa was the apple of her eye.
Ever since his birth in April last year, Florence had been showing him off, unable to hide her excitement at giving birth over the age of 40.
Going by the name "Mme a Masakona" on social networks, Florence regularly uploaded photos of her son on her social media pages.
GONE TOO SOON
Fighting back tears, Florence's friend and mother of three Basetsana Kumalo describes little Masa as an 'angel gone too soon'.
"My friend, I really don't know what to say to you. I am not going to say I know how it feels because I don't. Sometimes the devil comes to steal and destroy what we cherish. I know how much you adored your son. But you must know that throughout your pain, Christ is still in control. Masa was only 18 months old but he touched so many hearts and lives. He came and he conquered," she told Florence.
Dressed in a black hat, wearing sunglasses and a colourful Venda bolero, Florence is overcome with emotions as her daughter Monthati (20) speaks about her little brother.
"There was never a dull moment when Masa was around. One thing he was notorious for was constantly disrupting everyone's cellphone conversations. SOmehow he believed his 'yeah year yeahs' made sense to the person on the other end of the line. I won't forget the day he grabbed my mom's phone and threw it in a basin full of water thinking he was doing her a favour by washing and rinsing it. But that was the kind of kid Masa was. I guess we as adults sometimes don't realise the impact a child has on us until they are gone," she said.
Tears flow freely as musician and family friend Maduvha recalls how her daughter had a premonition three weeks prior to little Masa's death.
"We were at the beach and as the waves were rolling in she suddenly cried out, 'Call Auntie Flo'. When I ignored her she insisted until I did. To my shock she told Florence, 'When the big wave comes, do not be scared because you will be okay'. At the time I just thought she was just being a child," said Maduvha.
DISMISSING DEATH RUMOURS
Florence's brother, Gauteng government communications boss, Thabo Masebe, used the occasion to lash out at some media houses for what he calls 'malicious and sensational reporting'. At the time of the toddler's death, it was reported that Florence and her friends had been having a party at her house and that the child had been left unattended.
"I was shocked and dismayed to read such nonsense and lies about my sister. Florence was a loving and caring mother to Masa. She loved her child dearly. The sight of Florence sitting on the couch in the lounge holding Masa's lifeless body for two hours will forever be etched in my mind. This is the same couch she sat on when she fed him. As the police were taking statements for a case of accidental death, she sat there holding him. SHe held him until he was cold," he revealed.
According to friends of Florence, there was no party at the house on the day Masa drowned - Florence was with Monthati and Masa at home when the tragedy took place.
Speaking to us after the funeral service as Masa was taken to his final resting place in Venda, Dr Ramathuba said Florence said to her,"My sister, the pain I feel today after the loss of my son is worse than what I felt in 1999 after I was shot."
Florence was shot SIX times in the drive-by shooting in August 1999. She was shot in her hands, right leg and arm. To date, no one has been arrested and the star claims she has no idea who it was and why she was targeted.
The former Generations actress said she will not be speaking to or making comments to the media until she has fully mourned her son's death
