Israel Makoe - The biggest gangster on SA television. The actor who is also poet, singer and dancer was born in Alexandra. He is the second-born in the family of five and grew up aspiring to be famous. He was arrested for the first time at the age of 14 for house breaking and theft. In 1996 he was sentenced to eight years in prison.
While serving his jail term he formed a theatre group called Abaqobi drama group. The first play he wrote and directed, Hayi Kabi Magenge features some of the inmates and the members of VSTC based in Alexandra.
Samkelo Ndlovu - Rhythm City actress and singer is proudly from Alex and says she still visits there often. She currently portrays the character of Lerato on the e.tv soap opera and previously played Sonia on SABC 1's hit drama series, Zone 14 and DJ Lulu on SABC 1's long-running soap opera Generations.
Chef Benny Masekwameng became a familiar face on TV as a MasterChef South Africa judge - a far cry from his township upbringing, when his mother ran an informal catering kitchen. Today he's a household name.
Kgalema Petrus Motlanthe was born on the 19 July 1949 in Alex. He served as President of South Africa between 25 September 2008 and 9 May 2009, following the resignation of Thabo Mbeki.
Mongane Wally Serote was born in Sophiatown but spent his days in Alex. Serote's poems about places, particularly his Alexandra poems, grapple with the problems of squalor, violence, death, destitution, exploitation and the Black People's quest for identity and a sense of community.
Nelson Mandela settled in Alex after leaving the Eastern Cape in 1941. The house was owned by John Madzeka Xhoma and his wife who ran a transport business and owned two other properties. Mandela rented a room in the back yard. In his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom Mandela wrote: "Alexandra occupies a treasured place in my heart. It was the first place I lived away from home."
Skwatta Kamp - Rap crew Skwatta Kamp which was first introduced to us in 2002 with their album Khut En Joyn has never been shy about representing their township. The group, made up of Infa, Nish, Shugasmakx, Nemza, Slikour, Relo, Bozza and the late Flabba, won countless awards and made every hip-hop fan crazy with their underground hip hop swag which was relatively new in the country at the time. The group also launched solo careers of their members.
Revolution - Before disc newbies Major League, identical twins Joseph and George Mothiba, also known as Revolution, made it their responsibility to release hit after hit every December for the festive madness from the 1990s. To date the pair has released four albums and released a number of singles such as Light Up My life which was once the national anthem in local clubs and radio stations.
Mo T - Popularly known for his contribution as a trumpeter for his successful band Micasa most people don't know that Mo T, whose real name is Moshe Kgasoane, was born in Alexandra. Moshe, together with his peers J'Something and Dr Duda, started the band in 2011. They are responsible for dropping us dance hits like Jika and mesmerising girls with tracks like Turn You On and Heavenly Sent.
L-Tido - Rapper and producer L-Tido might easily pass as a cheeseboy but this talented lyricist is proudly a Gomora boy. Since his big break into the industry Thato Madonsela has released two albums with hits such as Dlala ka Yona and We Rolling. He has worked with the likes of Cassper Nyovest, K. O and Ice Prince.
Cga Bopha - Musician Sipho Masebe popularly known as Cga isn't only a musician, a fashionista and a yummy model but this lad also earned himself a place as Jozi's party master. He also hails from the Alexandra township.
Sean Pages - Rapper Sean Pages has been in the music scene longer than he has been famous. The rapper was famous in the underground hip-hop lines before he burst into the local music scene with his song Hustle N Flow. Pages has since played it low since his ugly public spat with TV star Nonhle Thema
