Yesterday marked exactly one year since Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa, was murdered. He was senselessly silenced by a bullet from an unknown gunman while visiting his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus, in Ekurhuleni.
The two lovebirds have a love child together. For the past year, police have been picking their noses and are not even close to solving the mystery murder, despite the huge media and public outcry.
At the time of his death, Senzo was at the height of his career. He was beginning to own the Pirates and Bafana number one shirt. To the people of his kasi in Umlazi K Section, in KZN, Senzo was a beacon of hope and proof that dreams do come true. That any boy from kasi can one day captain Pirates and Bafana. And to his family he was the breadwinner and his dad's favourite son. Even though his death was followed by a lot of controversy, Senzo is sorely missed.
Meyiwa's timeline:
26 October 2014:
Senzo is shot dead at Kelly's home at about 8pm. A struggle ensues and one of the robbers fires the gun. A bullet strucks Senzo in the upper body.
29 October 2014:
Senzo's dad, Sam Meyiwa, is angered by Kelly, who refuses to hand over Senzo's belongings including his ID. Sam leaves his home in Umlazi K Section and heads off to Johannesburg to personally collect Senzo's belongings.
1 November 2014:
Senzo is buried and awarded an official provincial funeral. The service is held at a packed Moses Mabhida Stadium and he is later laid to rest at the Heroes Acre cemetery in Chesterville, KZN.
November 2014:
Two men are arrested in Musina and are released shortly afterwards. Zamokuhle Mbatha, a car washer from Kelly's neighbourhood is also arrested, appears in court and charges against him withdrawn.
23 November 2014:
A Sunday Sun investigation reveals the goalkeeperwas an age cheat. The tombstone of Senzo's twin and his school register, proves he was 30 years old and not 27. A tombstone belonging to Senzo's twin, Siya who passed away in 1993, is removed by Sam on the day Senzo is buried.
The tombstone apparently recorded Siya's date of birth as 24 January 1984. The People's Paper discovers the murdered goalie's school register recorded the same 1984 date of birth.
April 2015:
Sam tells a magazine his son's killers are those who were with him on the day he was murdered. Chicco Twala's son was present at the time of the murder.“As far as I know, there were three boys in that house when the incident happened. Why is he the only one concerned? Is he guilty of something?” asked Sam.
22 April 2015:
Chicco hits back: “Meyiwa's comments . . . that he knows the killers – are misleading and can endanger the lives of people who were present. I'm saying this because my son was present when Senzo was killed, so it's irresponsible for him to talk as if he (Senzo's dad) was present when this incident occurred.”
May 2015:
The police face a lawsuit. Zamokuhle Mbatha sues both the police and the National Prosecuting Authority for defamation and unlawful arrest for R10 million. The lawsuit is for defamation, unlawful and wrongful arrest.
14 June 2015:
Sam says he's hiding from the same hitmen he believes gunned down his son. He claims he fears for his life after being warned by hitmen that if he doesn't “keep quiet”, they're going to kill him.
23 July 2015:
Police claim they are getting closer to cracking the case. “We're busy investigating and getting overwhelming evidence, we're closing the net, but should also make sure whoever we arrest is the right suspect. We're getting good evidence. We're left with linking a suspect to the crime,” Major-General Vincent Leshabane tells journalists.
17 August 2015:
Chicco Twala claims his gun was taken by police three months after Senzo was shot and killed. Chicco says police wanted to have his gun to run ballistic tests, as they are investigating all angles in the case.
Last week:
Senzo's dad tells City Press life is tough and they sometimes go to bed on empty stomachs because they don't have money. He says he's trying to find out what's happening with Senzo's R5 million life assurance policy
